Defoe stunned at Tottenham move | World Soccer

Jermain Defoe has admitted he was shocked to learn that he was about to become a Tottenham Hotspur player.

The former West Ham striker agreed a a £7m move to Spurs just hours before the transfer window closed and although the England under-21 international had been tipped for a return to the Premier League, few thought he would be making the journey across London.

“I’m relieved to have signed but I didn’t really expect it,’ admitted Defoe.

“I was sitting at home looking forward to the Bradford game so it’s all a shock. That said, I’m delighted that it’s happened.”

“I see Tottenham as a massive club. I’m just really looking forward to it.”

The move will see the England Under-21 international linking up with former Hammers team-mate Frederic Kanoute.

“I’m looking forward to linking up with Freddie and the other top players at the club as well,” said Defoe.

Spurs caretaker manager David Pleat admitted his delight at the new signing.

“I can’t think of a British striker at his age who has achieved as much in such a short space of time,’ he said.

“His goal record for a 21-year-old is quite exceptional. I hope he will have a fine and flourishing career at Tottenham.

“And this keeps our policy of wanting to develop a young team with prospects to really improve and get into Europe.”
